In Their Own Words: What the New Hospital Means to
Sentara Potomac Hospital Employees

Spring is near…. and so is the New Sentara Potomac Hospital. Spring symbolizes new beginnings and Sentara Potomac Hospital is celebrating the beginning of a new era of caring for the residents of eastern Prince William County and northern Stafford County.

In March, after two and a half years of construction and over 10 years of planning, Sentara Potomac Hospital’s new, four-story, 180,000-square foot patient care building is opening. This new patient care building, which essentially replaces the majority of our current inpatient units, is a great benefit for patients, but it’s also a big deal for those working inside the hospital -- taking care of people every day.

We asked some employees “What does the ‘new Sentara Potomac Hospital’ mean to you?”

Maureen Deutermann, MSN, R.N., Director of Community Education; 17 years of service: “It’s impossible for me to think about what the New Sentara Potomac Hospital means to me without reflecting on the ‘old:’

“As a brand new nursing supervisor in the ‘old’ hospital, I vividly remember how confused I was by the rambling layout of the place and the numbers of the rooms (where the heck was 4410 in a one-story building?). The New Sentara Potomac Hospital will have signs and room numbers that are very easy to follow.

“As a community educator and a nursing educator I got used to hauling televisions, projectors, laptops, etc. from the farthest reaches of the hospital to the conference rooms. I took up strength training to prepare for the task. The Hylton Education Center [garden level in the new facility] will have state of the art, built-in audiovisual equipment. Heaven!

“I have been at Potomac for over 17 years. I attribute this longevity largely to the caring, dedicated and multi-talented coworkers with whom I have had the privilege of working and calling my friends. Sentara Potomac Hospital brings the best of the ‘old’ to the ‘new,’ and these good people will always be what Sentara Potomac Hospital means to me.”

Joanne Grant, MSN, R.N., Director of Medicine/Oncology; 15 years of service: “Fifteen years ago when I first arrived at Sentara Potomac Hospital I was impressed by the atmosphere of the community hospital setting. Over the years we have watched the community grow and our hospital try to change, grow and keep up with the healthcare challenges of the changing community. One word comes to mind with the new and exciting move to our new facility .....opportunity.

“We have the opportunity to make a lasting impression on our community by continuing to provide exceptional patient care; the opportunity for patients to have private patient rooms; the opportunity for our staff to continue to deliver medications safely and efficiently with our new nurse servers; the opportunity to provide increased patient satisfaction with our new personalized food services; the opportunity to grow and expand our services for our outpatient infusion therapy, Hospice and dialysis patients.

“But most importantly, I look forward to the opportunity to be on the cutting edge of providing our community with the chance to receive the best care possible from a staff who is dedicated and committed to quality. Our new building will allow us to better serve all patients and their specific needs in a more improved and personal manner. I am so glad to have been involved in this process and transition because not only do I work here -- I am also a part of our community.”

Sondra Williams R.N., C, Director of the Surgical and Orthopedic Unit; 25 years of service: “It has been a remarkable experience for me to be involved in planning the nursing unit and actually moving into this new building. Our capacity in Surgical & Orthopedics [third floor] will increase from 12 semi-private rooms (24 beds) to 40 private rooms. The staff has been busy planning new patient care processes, including change of shift report and patient care assignments that will allow the nurses and care technicians to be close to their group of patients.

“Patient-centered care will include having medications, equipment and supplies in each patient room and the patient record near the room instead of at the nurses’ station. We are looking forward to implementing these changes and being involved in such an important transition.”

William M. Moss, President, Sentara Potomac Hospital; 27 years of service: “When I arrived at Sentara Potomac Hospital in 1978 I was excited and eager to be a part of a successful community hospital. Even though Potomac looked more like an elementary school than a thriving healthcare institution, I could see its potential to grow and progress right along with Prince William County.

“Many people are not aware that additional beds, private rooms, and a multi-story ‘tower’ were all included in the early strategic plans at Potomac. This new facility is what our patients need and what they deserve. The wait has been long but the results will benefit this community for many years to come.”
