The Cancer Center at Sentara Potomac Hospital is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and offers a full-range of diagnostic and treatment options for patients with cancer, as well as a number of programs to help to prevent and manage this disease.

National Cancer Survivors Day is held each year in hundreds of communities throughout the world on the first Sunday in June. It is a symbolic event to demonstrate that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality. Join us for speakers, refreshments and entertainment.
William Moss, Sentara Potomac Hospital president, will open the program followed by Dr. Susan Boylan, radiation oncologist, who will present current survivor trends in cancer care. Also, an inspirational message will be shared by Christine Luckenbaugh, a 10-year cancer survivor.

Surviving to Thriving is a day-long educational and healing retreat for cancer survivors who have completed active treatment. Enjoy guest speakers and programs along with a continental breakfast and lunch. This educational program is hosted by nurses who are members of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Oncology Nurses Society and has received support from the Oncology Nurses Society, Northern Virginia hospitals, medical oncology practices, and community businesses.

On Cancer Prevention and Management by Health Professionals
Our certified breast self-examination instructors and community educators are available to make presentations at the workplace or to local community groups of 10 or more people. Some popular topics include breast, health education, colorectal cancer awareness and prevention, skin cancer prevention, and nutrition in cancer prevention. In cooperation with the American Cancer Society, our community educators are also available to present important cancer prevention information to children, from elementary to high school age groups.

Look Good, Feel Better
This program helps women cope with changes in appearance that are associated with cancer treatment. Certified cosmetologists provide instruction in makeup, choosing and caring for a wig and expert advice on using scarves and turbans. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the National Cosmetology Association and the Personal Care Products Council.

Medical Nutrition Therapy
Cancer and its management can lead to malnutrition and undesirable weight loss. Making changes in your diet can help ensure you get the nutrients you need. Because it is designed to help manage your cancer, Medical Nutrition Therapy should be discussed with your physician in order to receive a referral. Many insurance companies will cover the cost of Medical Nutrition Therapy as part of cancer management plans. However, we suggest that you contact your insurance company before making an appointment to discuss whether or not this service is covered under your plan and to obtain prior authorization.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Programs
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States and affects just as many women as men. However, colorectal cancer is preventable and can be cured when detected early. During this program, which is offered to community groups of 10 or more people, you’ll learn about the risk factors and screening options for colorectal cancer as well as healthy choices you can make to reduce your risk.
