The Diabetes Management Program at Potomac Hospital is recognized by the American Diabetes Association for quality patient education. Education is the cornerstone of our program. Self-management skills are essential survival skills that can help you avoid, or delay, the complications of disease. Because staying healthy can be challenging, we offer a number of ways to make it a little easier.
All programs meet at Potomac Hospital unless otherwise specified. Please let us know at the time of registration if you are hearing impaired so that an interpreter may be provided. Class dates and registration fees are subject to change.
Potomac Hospital's Diabetes Program Recognized by the American Diabetes Association
Potomac Hospital’s Diabetes Self-Management Program has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Programs that achieve recognition status boast a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management to their participants.
The ADA Education Recognition effort, begun in 1986, is a voluntary process, which assures that approved education programs have met the national standards for diabetes self-management programs.

DIABETES MANAGEMENT CLASSES
Diabetes Management Classes*
Weekday (9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and evening (6:00 to 9:00 p.m.) classes meet for two days. Saturday classes are held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Taught by our staff of certified diabetes educators, who are also registered nurses and registered dietitians, this program provides practical advice on nutrition, medications, achieving better blood glucose control, hygiene, sick day management, community resources, techniques for combating stress and exercise. An individual pre-assessment and follow-up nutrition consultation are included. This program is designed to complement your doctor’s care and requires a doctor's prescription.

Gestational Diabetes Management Program

This two-hour program is offered once a week for women diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy.

This comprehensive program is for people with diabetes who are using or will be starting insulin pump therapy. Taught by certified diabetes educators who are specially trained in pump therapy instruction, this program includes how to use and maintain an insulin pump, plus important information about nutrition, carbohydrate counting, exercise, and sick day, hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia management.

Do you know your numbers? Find out for your heart’s sake. Take three quick steps to heart health awareness. Your total cholesterol and blood pressure, which are two important indicators of heart health, will be measured as well as your blood glucose level. A body composition analysis is also included. Professional health educators will discuss your results with you at the time of your appointment.

Weekday classes meet 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; evening classes meet 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; weekend classes meet 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Pre-diabetes is a term used to describe the condition of having blood glucose levels higher than normal but not yet having type 2 diabetes. This class for people with pre-diabetes will show how physical activity and aiming for a healthy weight can reduce or eliminate the risk of developing diabetes. Our certified diabetes educators provide practical information on nutrition, exercise, medications and achieving better blood glucose control. An individual follow-up consultation is included as well as a blood glucose meter.
