Our History, Our Community & Our New Sentara Sentara Potomac Hospital
Sentara Sentara Potomac Hospital is a 183-bed, not-for-profit community hospital serving Prince William County and its surrounding communities. The mission of Sentara Sentara Potomac Hospital is to identify healthcare needs and enhance the health of our community members regardless of race, color, religion, creed or ability to pay. Sentara Sentara Potomac Hospital offers a wide range of medical specialties, a highly qualified medical and clinical staff, and state-of-the-art technology required to uphold our mission. Sentara Sentara Potomac Hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission.
Sentara Potomac Hospital’s primary service area population exceeds 356,000 encompassing eastern Prince William, southern Fairfax and northern Stafford Counties and is expected to grow 12% to nearly 400,000 over the next five years.
A new $71 million, 180,000-square-foot patient care facility opened in March 2006 on our campus to replace our original medical surgical building, built in 1972, and our critical care unit. Our four-story facility includes
the Garden Café and Hylton Education Center on the Garden Level and three levels dedicated to patient
care. All patient rooms in the new facility are private.
Hospital-Based Patient Care Services
- Located on Level 1 of the new Sentara Potomac Hospital is our 16-bed Intensive Care Unit, 8-bed Intermediate Care and 24-bed Surgical/Orthopedic/Bariatric Unit which provides pre- and postoperative care to the general surgical patient.
- Medicine/Hematology/Oncology/Hospice units, located on Level 2, includes a 34-bed Medical unit, a 12-bed Hematology/ Oncology Unit plus a dedicated Hospice suite (featuring four private patient rooms and family support area). There is a four-bed inpatient dialysis suite and six-bay
outpatient infusion center for providing chemotherapy, blood transfusions, hydration therapy, intravenous antibiotic therapies and injections.
- The 40-bed Progressive Care Unit, located on Level 3 is complete with telemetry. .
- KidsPort, our specialty designed Pediatric Unit (a separate, secure unit also located on level 3), has 10 beds, 24-hour in-house, board-certified pediatric staff and specialty nursing and child-friendly design features.
- Women's & Children's Services include nine LDRs, two ORs, 16-bassinet nursery and a level II Neonatal ICU with 24-hour neonatology coverage. Level 3 tertiary backup is with Inova Fairfax Hospital. Facilities include a private perinatal assessment suite, two L&D triage and two observation
rooms, nine Labor/Delivery/Recovery rooms, an expanded nursery, transitional nursery and NICU. There were 2,109 newborn deliveries in 2009.
- The Irene V. Hylton Emergency Care Center, staffed by an emergency medicine physician group, had 61,417 visits in 2009. It is complete with a stat lab and dedicated x-ray; 42 private exam rooms including two cardiac, two trauma (one equipped for pediatrics); an eight-bed dedicated pediatric treatment area called KidsCARE; an eight-bed transitional care area; six minor care rooms; and HAZMAT room.
- Century Surgical Services is located in the Century Medical Building on the campus of Sentara Potomac Hospital. Three operating rooms (with outfitting for a fourth) offer state-of-the-art outpatient surgical care and technology including ceiling suspended Berchtold booms and in-room nursing documentation stations. Sentara Potomac Hospital offers extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) as an outpatient procedure performed by urologists at Century Surgical Services.
- da Vinci® Robotic-Assisted Technology -- Sentara Potomac Hospital is the first facility in the Prince William area to offer state-of-the-art robotic surgical technology to patients. The da Vinci® System gives surgeons
unprecedented control and three-dimensional views of the body’s anatomy. The system also provides full freedom of movement at its instrument tips, allowing precise operation in a closed chest, abdomen or pelvis.
- Potomac Center Outpatient Services provides endoscopy services, diagnostic testing including lumbar puncture, thoracentesis and paracentesis, removal of minor lesions and outpatient wound therapy services.
- The Cancer Center at Sentara Potomac Hospital, accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, offers surgical and chemotherapy services, educational programs, screening fairs, Potomac Radiation Oncology Center, Cancer Registry, cancer support groups, Look
Good/Feel Better and other American Cancer Society programs, and a patient newsletter.
- The Weight Loss Surgery Center at Sentara Potomac Hospital is accredited by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The ASMBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of excellent outcomes in bariatric surgery. Now in its seventh year, the program offers laparoscopic gastric banding and laparoscopic gastric bypass procedures. The surgical team has performed more than 2,000 operations.
Diagnostic & Support Services
- 24-hour Respiratory Therapy including neonatal respiratory capability, pulmonary function studies, arterial blood gases, and a Sleep Lab operated in partnership with Georgetown University Hospital.
- Radiology and Imaging Services including PACS offering remote access capability and diagnostic services including digital radiography, high-field MRI, 64- slice CT scanner, Cardiac CT Angiography
(CCTA), and mobile PET/CT, as well as ultrasound, nuclear medicine, digital mammography with
CAD, DEXA bone densitometry, and stereotactic breast biopsy.
Non-Invasive Cardiology services include electrocardiogram, echocardiography, TEE, stress
echocardiography, exercise stress testing, nuclear cardiology, 24-hour Holter Monitor, EEG and diagnostic
cardiac catheterization. Also available are Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (CVIR) services
and Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs.
- Inpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy services. Outpatient neurorehabilitative and orthopedic patients are served by physical, occupational and speech therapists at Inova
Physical Therapy Center, a partnership of Sentara Potomac Hospital and Inova Health System,
located in the Century Medical Building on the hospital campus.
- The Diabetes Management Program is staffed by certified diabetes educators and other trained healthcare professionals. This American Diabetes Association nationally-recognized program offers
individual counseling, group classes, a monthly support group and an annual Diabetes Fair.
- The Care Coordination Department, staffed by registered nurses and social workers, provides assessment of the immediate needs of our patients and their families and initiates discharge plans at admission to assess, plan, implement, coordinate, monitor and evaluate the options and services to meet individuals' health needs.
- Health Sciences Library provides in-house access to books and journals in addition to various online resources including PUBMED and the Virginia Library Information Network.
- At Your Request Room Service Dining® to best meet the dietary needs of all our patients.
Medical Staff: 300 (Active & Associate Members representing 46 Medical Specialties
- Accredited by the American Medical Association through the Medical Society of Virginia and approved for Category I credit, Potomac offers regularly scheduled Continuing Medical Education programs, plus Tumor Board, Cardiology Conference and other specialty specific CMEs.
- Hospitalist Management Group – In July 2008 Sentara Potomac Hospital welcomed a team of hospitalists from Hospitalists Management Group (HMG). The hospitalist team provides medical care for unassigned adult inpatients. The physicians are in-house, 24-hours-a-day, to provide medical management and care for their patients.
Community Education and Community-Based Care
- The Community Education and Health Promotion Department seeks to promote health and wellness by offering classes, seminars, and health fairs in a variety of community settings geared to
participants of all ages. Courses are designed to meet the specific needs of our community.
Frequent topics include parenting and pre-natal/childbirth education, CPR & safety, asthma, heart
disease, cancer and diabetes. The department employs a dedicated and diverse staff of community
educators, and offers many services at no cost in order to assist residents with limited or no access to healthcare.
- Other Community Education services include a senior immunization program, annual skin cancer
and PAD screenings, and a variety of monthly support groups. Sentara Potomac Hospital physicians are also
valued members of the Community Education team and are often called upon to share their expertise for screenings, support groups and as seminar speakers.
- Two Family Health Connection Mobile Clinics are staffed by nurse practitioners from Potomac
Hospital who provide physical examinations, vision and hearing screenings, growth assessments,
blood pressure checks, immunizations, basic medical care and health information. Combined they
had 7,833 patient visits in 2009.
- Sentara Potomac Hospital's OB Clinic offers comprehensive prenatal, delivery and post partum services to expectant mothers who may not be able to afford such care, are not eligible for Medicaid, and do not have health insurance with maternity benefits. The Delphi Ob/Gyn Group is available 24 hours,
seven days a week to provide care for OB clinic and unassigned obstetric patients.
- In addition to its telephone referral service, Potomac Health Connection, Sentara Potomac Hospital now offers physician referrals on its website - potomachospital.com. In 2009, Potomac’s Health Connection provided 7,468 referrals to members of our medical staff, hospital and community
services, and registrations for community education classes, as well as 18,297 online physician profile hits on potomachospital.com.
