On Saturday, January 31, the Dale City Civic Association presented its Kathie Feeney Nurse of the Year award for 2008 to Sentara Potomac Hospital’s Laurel Sorter, R.N.
Laurel Sorter came to Potomac Hospital in 1978 and worked in the Emergency Department for eleven years. When the Endoscopy Unit and Outpatient Services opened in 1985 she was one of the first staff nurses to transfer to this newly created department. In 2000, Laurel became the assistant director of Surgical Services in charge of the Endoscopy Suite.
In her position as a staff nurse, there was nothing Laurel would not do to help a patient. When she assumed a management role, she utilized the same attitude of caring for her staff and the group of doctors with whom she worked. Laurel is a true working manager -- interacting with her staff and providing patient care on a daily basis. Her ‘can do’ and supportive attitude is reflected in a very friendly and caring nursing staff who have developed a unique support system.
Sorter is certified in Gastrointestinal Nursing and keeps abreast of all new procedures and changes in this area. She has been instrumental in developing both physician and nursing protocols used by the GI doctors and nurses in bringing new procedures to Potomac Hospital.
Continuing nursing education is very important to Sorter. So much so that her entire staff participates in the Clinical Advancement Program at the Nurse Clinician level.
Sorter has been an outstanding and loyal employee of Sentara Potomac Hospital for more than 30 years. She lives in the community and is an asset to both the hospital and the citizens for whom she has provided outstanding care.
